Canada AL11

Alberta 1906 (circa.) Twenty five cent black lettering on yellow background originating from Plate II where background print is composed of six scroll blocks, all facing north east, instead of south west on Plate I. Scarcer than the elusive 25c (black) on grey background, which coincidentally was also printed with Plate II background. This background type on the 25c (black) on yellow has been documented as early as 1922 by Senator Calder (Collectors Club of New York, Vol. 1, No. 4, page 138-145) as Type III and assigned its own number in his Reference List (No. 8) and is also listed in the more recent and exhaustive Zaluski catalogue as ABL10Z2 and showing a rarity factor “ER”
(Exceedingly rare) the highest assigned rarity factor. Natural straight edge at right, small portion of handstamp cancel at foot and single punch cancel, light horizontal crease at top, still nice appearance. This example is among the only mere five examples Bileski was able to find in his extensive research on the Alberta First Issue Law Stamps – a great showpiece for an advanced revenue collection, Very Fine (Van Dam AL8 variety; Zaluski ABL10Z2)
